I don’t like Frank’s reference to our friend Maggie. I sure do remember the days of lollygagging on our porch all the while Angela Parenza was lollygagging on her porch just 4 houses away. Those were the days that we waited until Monday.

The Waiting Til Monday policy is really better for everyone. Don’t worry too much about Frank. He means well.

I really like what you’ve done with these lines:

“and whatever was on the porch a few blocks down by Bob Berdella’s I cannot say. We were too scared of ghosts to walk past what was lost there.”

It’s the unspoken association of the Smart case, the neighbor’s stark porch with a single floral demarcation… juxtaposed to a sleeping being, unaware of the incoming news of yet another fresh horror making its way to the doorstep.

your comment suggests you remember bob berdella. ken’s family was never in danger– the neighborhood horrors associated with berdella occurred in the late 80’s, and the house was torn down over a decade ago. still it is unsettling to imagine the tincture of evil that once existed nearby, so close to such sweet spirits. thank you for reading, for remembering, for understanding.
